An Prediction Market Trader Made $436K from Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A trader profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of the event.
Market Movement in Forecasts
Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to former President Trump stated on the weekend that Maduro had been taken into custody.
One account, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a initial bet of $32,537.
It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Probability Spikes Before Announcement
Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
But the odds had jumped to over 10% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the morning of the next day, suggesting a sharp shift in positions just before the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the characteristics of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said Dennis Kelleher.
A handful of other platform users also profited tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.
Legal Questions Grows
Politicians are starting to take note.
A bill introduced on recently aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.
This sector were examined under the previous administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market arena.
An official representative for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
