The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
